The art of portraiture goes back to ancient Roman times, if not earlier. It was in ancient Rome, however, that the painting of portraits first flourished. Initially, these were realistic and matter-of-fact pictures that merely captured the subject as he or she "was." By the time of the fourth century, however, these portraits became idealized, showing the subject in the best, most flattering light.

Portrait photography got its start with the daguerreotypes of the mid-19th century. These were much less expensive than a traditional painted portrait, although the 30-second exposure time created rigid and un-lifelike poses. Today, with modern photography, portraits can be exciting and exuberant, bursting with life within the frame.
